AT&T won't unlocks any iphones that is locked on its network,
If you need to bring the iphone oversea to use with local carriers, you must buy the unlocked version in apple store.
may be you can sell your locked phone on eBay or anywhere else?

You somehow missed the 1000000 topics and stickies here that explain that you bought the wrong iPhone from Apple.
Apple sells three iPhones
1) with contract, discounted
2) without contract, but still sim-locked to AT&T (you bought this one)
3) sim-unlocked, no contract (you wanted this one, it costs more than the one you bought)
You need to call APPLE. AT&T doesn't have anything to do with you choosing the wrong model. Nor does AT&T (or Apple) have any way of turning #1 or #2 into #3. AT&T cannot unlock your iPhone.
Call Apple. http://www.apple.com/contact/

There is no help from Apple or ATT. You bought a phone that does not come with the capablity to be unlocked. Either send it back and get a refund or try eBay and buy a phone that will work.
Sorry!

You let the Apple HK people know you purchased this in a US APPLE store, and were sold the incorrect version? Note that obviously trying to get support for a US phone outside the US is going to be spotty at best. Any reason why you didn't buy an unlocked phone in HK?
You should call the Apple US 800 number. It's doubtful they will accept a return unless you are inside of 30 days.

They probably just gave you that answer as a standard answer without knowing anything about US iPhones. AT&T can do nothing for you. Apple US should be able to exchange your phone if you are within the 30 day retrun period. If you are past the 30 days, there is nothing they can/will do.

Actually, I believe starting in mid June, 2011 (See This Link) Apple started selling unlocked iPhone 4 devices in the Apple retail stores in the US.

If you knew it was locked before you went back to HK, what are you looking for Apple to do? It was locked before you went there and it's locked now that you are there. What's different now?
BTW, Apple started selling unlocked iPhone 4 a number of months months before the 4S was released, so for a while there were 3 types of GSM iPhone 4 sold by iPhone.

No, if you bought it last year, then you got one that says right there on the back that it was locked to AT&T. You can sell your year old phone to someone in the US, and buy a sim unlocked iPhone.

And just so you and everyone are clear, Apple is not going to help resolve this issue. Your phone is locked to AT&T, and that's not going to change (at least not through legitimate means via Apple or AT&T). Your best bet is to sell your phone and buy an unlocked HK handset.

NO Apple will not help. You bought a non-contracted iPhone that is still locked to ATT.
