Hi,
I currently have a pathetic, 4 year old Nokia Go Phone with a AT&T pre-paid plan and tons of unsued rollover minutes.
Anywho, I was wondering if I'll be able to pre-order a new iPhone 4S on the AT&T network thsi Friday and keep my current phone #?
I know I'll have to get a new calling/data plan, that's fine. But I'd like to keep my current number.
Will I be able to do that with an online pre-order?
Also - what are the chances I can keep my existing rollover minutes? (Not a deal-breaker, just curious)
Thanks.

Rollover minutes probably not.
Keeping your current number should not be a problem. As for how that process will work, someone else will need to comment.

When you order, you do not activate your new iPhone until you connect it to iTunes. If it were me, i would order from Apple then call ATT before activating the new phone. You can always call CS to confirm.

I just did a test run-through on the AT&T site with buying a regular iPhone 4, and they have a "transfer your current number" option, which they check automatically during the process.
Apparently, if it does pass the # check, not only will it transfer the number when you activate the new iPhone, it'll automatically cancel your current pre-paid phone plan in one step.
So you don't have to call AT&T to cancel your pre-paid plan after you sign up for the iPhone 4 data/calling plans - it'll happen automatically when your number is transferred during the activation.
(At least that's how it looks to me)
But, I'm not sure if this will be the same case Friday when trying to Pre-order the iPhone 4S.
Frequently Asked Questions about Transferring Your Number to AT&T
Q. Can I switch to AT&T but keep the phone number I already have from another carrier?
A. Yes, it's possible to keep the number you already have from another wireless, wireline, or VoIP carrier. During checkout, we'll check to see if your existing number is eligible for transfer to AT&T. If it is, then all you need to do is provide us with some information about your current phone service account. We'll do the rest to make the transfer happen.
Q. Will my current phone service continue to work until I get my new phone?
A. Yes, your current phone service will continue to work as usual until you receive your new phone from AT&T and follow the included instructions to activate it.
Q. Do I need to cancel my current service?
A. No. The number must be in active service in order to be transferred. Your old service will be canceled automatically once you receive your new device from AT&T and activate your new AT&T phone service. Note that inactive numbers may pass the transfer eligibility check, but if the number isn't active, the transfer to AT&T won't occur.
Q. What do I need to do to transfer my number to AT&T?
A. When you complete the checkout information form online, we'll ask you for some information about your current phone service account. We recommend you have a recent bill from your current service provider handy for quick reference.
You'll need to know:
- The billing address associated with your current provider account
- Your current account number, usually located on the top left corner of your bill
- Your password or Personal Identification Number (PIN) for your current account. This is not the password for logging in to their website to manage your account - it's the special word they ask you to help identify you over the phone. Not all accounts have this password or PIN, but if you have a prepaid account, yours may. If you can't remember this information, you can call your current service provider for help.
We'll walk you through the process of transferring your number(s) and assigning them to your new AT&T line(s) of service after we process your checkout information. Note that AT&T will contact your current service provider to complete the transfer. You don't need to do anything else once you've given us your information. The information you provide must exactly match your current service provider's records. If there is a mismatch in the data, the transfer will be delayed.
This is for the current iPhone 4 sold on the AT&T site. Not sure if it works with existing Pre-paid phone #s or with the new iPhone 4S.
I ASSUME it would, but who knows.

It can be done, but... DO IT IN THE CORPORATE AT&T STORE! If you try online, or over the phone, or through Apple, or through any authorized retailers I can almost 99% guarantee something will get messed up. Insist on keeping the same number. Some reps are unaware of that option, but it's there, so if there is a problem speak with the manager, don't let anybody, under any circumstances, activate a new number with a promise that your old number can be transferred over, that CAN NOT BE DONE, the proper procedure is called "Switching account type". Keep in mind guys that you'll have to switch to a postpaid account with 2 year contract, credit check will be required and possibly deposit. Good luck.

If your current prepaid number is already with AT&T, the 'transfer your number' option will not work. CS will have to transfer that number to a new contract service account.

Really?
I didn't know that.
That stinks. Why do they make transferring a number to a new phone with the same carrier so difficult?
You'd think it would easier than doing it from a different carrier...
CS is probably gonna be slammed tomorrow too. Gonna be stuck on hold forever I bet.
/sigh

When exactly would I have to contact Customer Service about transferring my phone number from my old AT&T phone to the new AT&T iPhone?
I'm planning on pre-order online tomorrow morning, but I'm not giving up my old phone # to get one. I already tested my phone # eligibility for the auto-transfer, and it didn't work. So, does that mean I can't pre-order a iPhone 4S online without getting stuck with a new #?
Or will they still ship it to me and then I'll still have the opportunity to keep my current phone # by calling Cusomter Service before I activate the phone?
Would I be able to get a new AT&T iPhone 4S, pay for it, have it shipped to me and be able to have my old AT&T phone number transfered to it before I activate the phone by calling customer service the day it arrives at my house?
Or will I get stuck with a new AT&T phone number at the time I place the order online?
(YES, not being able to keep my current AT&T phone number is a deal-breaker for this. Thanks)

Yesterday I asked these questions to an At&t person in an At&t Store. The guy said that:
- it is possible to keep the goPhone number and switch to a plan
- it should be done in an At&t store and not Apple Store
- for iPhone 4S they don't accept pre-orders on Oct 7, they only accept for upgrades or new numbers
- he told me to come October 14, when they have the stock.
- he also told me that since there will be lots of preorders, and lines on October 14, there is a very high chance that they will be out of stock immediately.
- the most sure way to buy and iPhone and keep the current goPhone number is to go to an At&t store in a month or so.
I think I'll just get a new number....
You can switch to Verizon though, our goPhone number is marked as eligible for number transfer in their web site

Ok, thanks a lot for posting this. Very good to know.
Still, it baffles my mind why it would be easier to transfer an AT&T number to a new phone on Verizon than it would be to transfer the AT&T number to a new phone on AT&T...
In fact, it seems almost counterproductive to retaining your customers' business.
Anyway, thanks for the tip!

Drumn_bass, thanks for the clear reply. Just a quick question. What happens to the balance amount on the account. I do have around 100 dollars on my gophone account. Will that get transfered as well? Thanks

I preordered on Saturday. I was afraid of doing this online so I went to the local AT&T store to ask and they set it all up. So they basically took my gophone and converted the account into a regular AT&T account. I had like 95.00 dollars of credit on the account so they moved that over to my new account. They preordered the iphone 4s for me and it will ship to my house. I did this on Saturday so he said I wouldn't get it on the 14th (cuz they ran out of the preorders) but he thought it would come the week after.

Thats awesome.. Did you have to pay a upgrade fee(18 dollars) or new connection service fee (35 dollars)?

Thats quesiton actually has me confussed. My wife upgraded her gophone to an iphone 4 in august. At that time they charged two upgrade fees of 18 dollars a piece.
When I ordered my iphone 4s they didn't charge any upgrade fees, just 212.xx for the phone (with tax). My wife and my phone will be on the same account but I would have thought that I would have still gotten an 18 dollar upgrade fee.
I can't really complain though. In the past when I have gone to verizon or AT&T stores they employees end up screwing things up. When I preordered my iphone 4s I got the same guy that upgraded my wifes phone in August and he seemed very capable and knew exactly what I wanted.
