AT&T selling unlocked iPhones

People are reporting being able to unlock iPhone 4S's purchased out of contract. Will we see AT&T unlock all the other iPhones out of contract? Like mine which I'm using as a paper weight here in China.

Apple has been sellng  unlocked GSM Iphones for about 7 months now, hasn;t changed ATT's policy yet, no indication that it will change it now - those unlocked phones are sold at full retail also, no price disocunts

The article didn't say that people are unlocking iPhone 4S's.  What it says is that Apple is SELLING unlocked phones.  They have been selling unlocked iPhone 4's for months but 1) they are being sold new as unlocked and only by Apple, and 2) the price for them is $50 more than a locked, no contract phone.  What's news is that Apple may be selling the phones now, instead of in November like people expected.  Nothing to do with unlocking phones that were sold as locked.

The unlocked phones have been the same price as the off-contract models, when I checked.

On the Apple store at the Apple web site, the unlocked, no contract 4S prices are shown as $649/749/849 ($450 over full discount). I thought the no-contract phones are $599/699/799 ($400 over full discount). At least I think that's what it was for the 4.

Nope - when they released Iphone 4 unlocked it was 649 /  749

What do you mean "Nope"?  That's what I said.  The unlocked iPhone 4s were 649/749.  The locked no contract phones were 599/699, which is $50 less.  Obviously, the 799/849 didn't apply to the iPhone 4 as there was no 64GB model.
