Sudden increase in data usage

Over the past 3 days my 3GB of data has been used up. It appears as if bursts of data are being used all at once. One was for amost a full GB. The people I've talked to in two different ATT stores appear to be at a loss for what's happening. Last person I talked with just turned off my internet access and said to open it back up on November 20th when my plan starts over again. Does any one have the right solution??

Same case here. I called the customer service and they had no clue.. I just monitoring the data by switching off the data for couple of days to see if there any change in the usage. I have been using the data plan for the past 2 years and havent seen such an increase.. I believe something is not right with the system with AT&T as they are trying to throttle everybody.

I can confirm the same pattern. I've had to change my data plans from 300mb to 3g after more than 3 years of consistant usage. Something is clearly wrong with AT&Ts billing system. I have a iPhone 4s, 5 and a android. ALL phones are showing the same increase in data usage so it is not limited to Apple IOS or Android. I spoke to a customer service rep and they are telling people it's the phone not the network.

It's not possible that my data rate suddenly doubled in one month after more than 2 years of consistent usage.

I am having the same problem as well!  Latest was today at 1pm when I was at the Hobbit and had my phone off for the movie.  Used up almost 500MB while my phone was off.  Now I am almost out of data despite having increased my plan and rarely, in the past, even approaching my limit.

Check to see if you have an email stuck in the Outbox.  Sometimes it seems like an email will get stuck sending over and over and it can eat all the data in your data plan, and a lot more.

I am having same problem.  In November, i got an alert that i was going over my data plan.  they told me time and date of large chunks of data being used.

Same thing happening again this cycle.

The common things I've noticed is that Ive physically been driving in a certain area when it happens.

My usage prior to november 2012 was consistent at below 1G.  I dont stream music, do video or anything.  now all of the sudden, I'm up to 3 plus gig used.

I have no idea what to do and ATT doesn't seem to have any answers.

Having the same problems since November. Spent hours trying to resolve with different salespeople in store and on the phone. Even called Samsung and they had me turn off data packet also. Glad to know I'm not alone with this, but wow is it frustrating. I've even eliminated programs, but that doesn't help.

I also turned off data packet thing, all gps tracking etc.

I looked at my usage from september 2011 when I got the phone to the present time.  NOT once did I ever use a full GB in over a year.  Then, all of the sudden, there are downloads of 500mb at a time!  I see a pattern too...they told me dates and times of these large data usages and every time I was driving to my son's dr appt. Yesterday, I drove in same area to go to a game and boom, this morning I got a notice that I am now over my 3gb allotment.  so what they told me to do last week (turn off packet data, turn off gps stuff) didn't help.

I don't do anything with my phone except make calls, check something on line occassionally, navigation once an awhile.  No music streaming, no videos nothing!  I'm so upset.

just got off the phone with att.  they have no solutions other than to reset my phone.  Yesterday when a big chunk of data was used, I was at home scrubbing my bathroom.  totally doesnt make sense.  the wi fi is on at home.  all they can suggest is that maybe I don't realize what I'm doing (LOL maybe the bleach fumes took over my senses and I used my phone for something).

They say could be the device.  I have until end of april for upgrade.

Until then, I guess I am keeping my data packet off.

someone mentioned a "stuck" email.  How would you know that is going on and how would you fix it?  Wouldn't it just send a "send failed"  rather than trying over and over again?

Same problem here.  I thought it was because I got a new phone, an HTX One X, which has LTE, on 3-Dec.  For 3 years before December, I had used less than 60MByte/mo., and then in December I used 190MBytes so had to turn off mobile data. I thought the usage was due to a poorly designed app and Web site that I had hit, but this topic suggests it's something different.  The data usage reported by my phone and by AT&T matched.  It's as if now there's additional or overhead usage compared to what the app or browser uses.

I am having the same problem.   I am using over 100,000 Kb when first am turning on my Internet.Does any anyone have an iPad? I am wondering if iCloud and  I tunes has anything to do with usage.  I have just turned my off today and am hoping this takes care of issue?  If this doesn't take care of it I am contacting the betterbusiness bureau.  There is no way I can all of the sudden be using over 5 gb a month for the last 2 months.  I have had to restrict my use to not go over my limit.  No one at AT&T can help.

That is a very small amount of monthly data compared to the 2-3 GB/month increase that other people on this thread are complaining about.

Smartphones use data in many more ways than just the browser and the apps you installed.  Gmail and other emails accounts use data.  And if you are getting email pushed frequently (from work email account, etc.) this can be a big contributor to data usage.  Aside from that, the phone will sync in the background for Weather, Stocks, News, and other built-in services that you may not have accounted for. Smartphones in general use a good amount of data in the background by design, for services that the manufacturer will think users will find useful.  190 Mb a month is not out of line with the typical background usage (combined with some browser use).

But everyone's preferences are different, and you may choose to shut them off some of the built-in services.  Try going to Settings>Accounts & sync, and disable or adjust the settings for the services in accordance to your needs/preferences, and this may help your data usage.

I have turned off every service running. I have deleted apps and I manually force stopped them. I am hoping that when I check my usage tomorrow that by turing off the icloud and itunes, photo backups, etc. will have taken care of everything.  Otherwise I am at the point where my 5 gb is gone and I will be charged for going over the 5gb.  I have never used that kind of data, I don't view videos, listen to music so this is frustrating.  I gave up a dsl line with unlimited usage for this ATT 5 gb plan that I use for 2 weeks and go over my plan! Yikes.

this is very interesting. I own a GS3 and we are suffering from the same issues as well as the Note 2 folks. The problem has been amplified ever since we all got the 4.1 update. i thought it was isolated to the samsung devices but now it seems that Att is actually having a major network issue on their high end branded phones. Someone high up really needs to take notice.

The same thing is happening to me on both phones on my account; GSII and Vivid. Our normal data usage is 2-3gb a month. Now we are over 5gb with 10 days in our billing cycle.

Anyone trying to say this is a services/app issue is kidding themselves.

Something is obviously going on here.

Force stopping an app will often just cause it to respawn and try to continue what it was doing when you stopped it.  If you can't uninstall the app, try to disable it in Settings.

I was finally sent to a repair center for a new phone, where the tech told me I could get a new phone but that the existing one I own could just have the software debugged and updated and it would be just fine. He knew exactly about the problem. I am getting a new phone instead, so we'll see where that takes us. Didn't know there was such a place until the 3rd ATT store I tried said I needed a new phone because they couldn't fix my problem either. If you reset your phone 3 times and there isn't a fix, you can get a new phone. I won't have the phone for another week, but will let you know if the same problem exists.

I just checked usage and see I had a 107300 unknown kb this a.m.  I was hoping I had it fixed.  I'll give it a try and let you know if it works.

Update, I reset my phone,  turned off lacation services, and didn't turn my iPad on.  When I checked usage later that day it showed I still used over 100,000 kb at one time after turning on. this is definitely an AT&T problem.

Good grief. I wish I had found this thread before I embarked on this day. For me it started yesterday at 12:08 PM (found out in hindsight by looking at the data usage online). Recurring massive data usages ranging from about 100 MB to 700 MB at a pop. About every 30 minutes to an hour, including all night when the phone was not in use and all applications were closed. Never exceeded 280 MB in a MONTH since I joined ATT, then 5GB used in a 24 hour period.

Called and talked to a rep, she said I had to take phone in to store, drove 40 minutes to store in order to spend another hour on the phone with a rep. They had me re-boot (can't remember the term), and said we'll call you tomorrow and see if it's fixed. On the drive home another 500 MB used.

Called again and raised heck. They are sending me another phone, although after reading this thread, I do not think it's the phone. There are numerous threads out there in other forums about the same issue.  My phone is Galaxy Skyrocked S2.

They also credited me $50.  That was after demanding to speak to a manager.  The rep apparently really did not want me to talk to a manager because he all of a sudden suggested the credit.

So I received a replacement phone with new software and so far it is working. Try calling the At&T device support center in Portland at {Inappropriate content removed} and tell them your story. I hope they can help you like they did me.

Update:  First, I think there is a chance that there have been no more big data usages on my phone since it was re-set yesterday.  There is a chance that I got delayed data usage info and did not interpret things correctly.

Second, I downloaded an app called My Data Manager that I read about on other threads while I was researching this problem.  I normally do not download apps, but I now want to know exactly where my data is going (web, os services, gmail, android system...) in the event this problem happens again.  It is a very straightforward app that tells you how much data you've used in the last hour, day, month on both for both wifi and mobile data.  It also tells you "where" the data is being used.

This app also lets you set alarms.  I set one for 100MB in a day.  This way I will get a very early alert if the problem comes back, as opposed to finding out from an ATT text saying I've used 90% of my data allowance (5 GB) 3 days into the billing period, which is how I found out this time.

Third, I now have my wifi turned on for my phone, which I have never done in the past because I don't use much data on my phone and I was trying to maximize battery life.  I work from home, most of the big data chunks went out while I was at home, so at least now if the problem starts again, it won't come from my data allowance and b/c of the alarm I've set I will know almost immediately.

The one thing I am unclear about is whether it's a phone problem or an ATT problem.  They are sending me another phone (re-furb, not new) bc they said I could invoke the warranty.  If the problem is NOT the phone, I would just as soon keep my old one bc there are other issues out there (phone shutting off in idle state) that my phone does not suffer from.  I would hate to take the chance of new glitches if this glitch was not due to the phone to begin with.
