Galaxy S2 (SGH-i777) Jelly Bean Update?

With the latest Jelly Bean update rolling out to the Skyrocket varriant of the Galaxy S2, all versions of the SGS2 have not recieved the Jelly Bean update, except for the SGH-i777 model. (Across all carriers, models, etc)

With that, I just wanted to check in to see if there are any plans by AT&T to update the model referenced above.

If so, any expectation when we can expect that?

If not, any information as to why not would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I should mention that I'm using a third party file explorer to browse for files. Specifically, I'm using ES File Explorer.  If you're using the native file explorer (My Files?), try another file explorer.

Could your internal SD card or external card be full?  If you sync your gallery / photos with Google+ photos, I think it tries to download everything in your albums online.  Try clearing the cache for Gallery by going into your Application manager, go to Gallery, and clearing the cache and data.  You can also try stopping sync with Google+ Photos so it doesn't sync automatically again, then try to open Gallery to see if it opens at all.

Anyone else experience slow performance since the update?  I thought Jelly Bean was supposed to be faster with Project Butter?

I'm seeing slow performance all over the place, but especially noticeable with the launcher.  Like if I am in an app and hit the home button, there's about a two second delay before it goes home.  Similarly when I launch an app.

Finally!
Everything is running smoothly though I had quite a bit of trouble getting it to load.  I think it was because I started with an older version of Kies on my laptop... it kept either just sitting preparing the update, or complaining my phone (which was at 100%) battery, wasn't charged enough, so I switched to another machine and did a clean Kies install and got it to work.

I think this ROM is faster and smoother than the old one, and, so far, I think the battery life is better, but I'll give it a couple days to settle in before saying that as a certainty.

I have noticed a slow down after updating, but my biggest issue is the sleep of death. I had cured this problem before the update, but that is the first thing my phone did after the update. I thought Jelly Bean was supposed to fix this problem?

One thing that has me wondering since my update is it seems the battery drains a little quicker... has anyone else seen anything with that? Looking at my battery options screen, with 4 hours and 24 minutes on battery, starting at 100%, the battery is at 64%. The "Screen" is at 54% (1 minute screen timeout) and the "Android OS" entry is next at 16%. That seems like a high percentage for "Android OS"... wouldn't this be more like a single digit percentage? The next entry is "Android System" at 6%, which seems reasonable.

I haven't measured battery usage, but I did notice that some background services that I had previous turned off became enabled again, thus probably doing more updates, and therefore draining more battery.

Specifically, I saw that Google Location History was turned on, and I know that's a big drainer because it's checking and updating your location regularly.

There might be additional places where background updating is either slowing things down and/or using battery.

My Google Maps Location History was turned on and I am pretty sure I had it turned off in the past, so I have turned it off. I'll see what happens. Thanks!

Mine  is  dead  slow after the upgrade. I have been  checking forums to see whether  there is  any solution or  decision to downgrade

Since performing the update my S2's battery life has been drastically reduced. It seems to be related to WiFi. Anyone else having similar issues?

Mine works on the notification tray and the lock screen.  But I am having the same problem of it not showing how many new messages I have on the messaging icon.

I updated Kies to the latest version, but it never connects to the S2.  It attempts, but never completes.  I have the phone in USB debug mode as someone suggested is needed for it to connect.

Any ideas why Kies won't connect?

Thanks

I'm also have a problem with battery drain after the jellybean update. The phone seems to drop about 5% an hour with no use and with use I loose almost 20% an hour with use. The phone gets EXTREMELY hot and eventually starts to flake out (I'm assuming because of the heat). I've tried to let the battery drain completely a few times as I read on a few other posts but at this point I would think I would have noticed any change. If anything the problem has gotten worse. With the phone plugged in, using it drops very slowly and with the screen off charging takes about 5 hours or more to charge. The phone had no problems before the update. The only other thing I've noticed with jellybean is the auto brightness setting the screen seem to always be way higher than it should be. In a pitch black room on auto bright the setting is about the same as moving the slider a third of the way to the right and in an office it's almost maxed out. I've stopped using auto brightness but the phone is still overheating and losing  battery. Anyway to recalibrate the screen brightness?

After all of the SOD problems that I had with the initial 4.04 update, I think I will wait until it is apparent from other users that this update is stable before making the change.

I too am having battery drain issues. First thing I would do is make sure that Google Now is not active. It comes up as Google Search in the applications lists I believe. You can also go to Settings/Location Services/ and 'uncheck' Location and Google Search. Then, go to Settings/Battery and check for applications that are eating up a lot of battery. I found one application that was doing a lot of damage. I believe it had a recent update or was acting up since the Jelly Bean update.

Good luck

I would try WITH PHONE ON removing the battery for about 3 minutes. If that does not help then try factory reset. Remember to back up contacts to SD card first.

Hello,

A bunch of things have been happening to my phone since the update.  (Update to JB itself proceeded smoothly).

The most serious of the issues is that everytime I restart the phone I lose access to the external SD card (something that has never happened before.)  It is not mounted.  If I go to Settings-Storage-MountSDCcard... it seems to start to mount the card then fails..  On the failed attempts, I get a message apologizing that the "Settings application has stopped working."  Then the phone spontaneously reboots and freezes during the reboot.

Then I have the joy of either pulling the battery or pressing and holding the on/off switch to restart the phone.  I am currently on the fourth cycle of this madness this morning.   I have only been able to remount the card after several attempts -- still not mounted as I type this message to you.

Essentially, the update has turned my phone into a disaster zone.

The other most noticeable and annoying problem is the frequent, spontaneous dropping of my wifi connection on my network at home.  It happens in spurts.  The last time this happened was yesterday evening.  The connection kept dropping on-and-off for about 45 minutes.  Then it seemed to be fine.  Just like the SD card issue, this dropping of the wifi connection never happened before.

A third annoyance (which has not happened since Wednesday morning) was my phone spontaneously rebooting -- occasionally.  Nothing in particular seemed to trigger it.... it would simply reboot.

Is there anything I can do to regain the usefulness of my phone?  Please help.

Harley

Same here.  I'm wondering if it's just a matter of new software on older hardware, and Jelly Bean is stretching the capabilities of a phone from 2011.

Wow, that's the worst experience I've read so far on this forum.  I think at this point you might want to try either a factory reset, or take your phone to an AT&T service center for service.

Good luck.

This update is awsome..project butter has resulted in better touch and control. Even Camera has improved. Overall really happy with 4.1.2 update. Thanks AT&T for finally releasing it. Now waiting for 4.2 :smileyhappy:

I upgraged my GS2 to the Jelly Bean 4.1.2 more than a week ago, and so far I love it. The upgrade using Kies was very smooth. After the upgrade that I made last December from ICS 4.0.3 to 4.0.4, my phone was having several problems like the sleep of death, a lot of black images showing up when I used the gallery, ringtones duplicated, and my ringtone been reset. After I installed the ICS patch on March, the sleep of death issue was solved, but the other issues related to the ringtones and black images remained. Finally, after I installed the Jelly Bean 4.1.2 on June 14, those issues were solved. I am glad that AT&T provided this Jelly Bean 4.1.2 upgrade to the original GS2! Although the phone response is a little bit slower and the battery drains a little bit faster, I have no big issues like the ones experienced with the upgrade on December. I am happy with the way my original GS2 looks and feels after the upgrade to Jelly Bean 4.1.2.

The update seemed to go fine on Friday from amsung Kies, but discovered that I was getting spotty email.  the reason I was getting spotty mail coverage was the data connection is not there.  wifi and phone are fine, but even after checking and unchecking everything that makes sence and many restarts, the wireless data is no longer working.  I am not sure what to try now.  It prety mutch kills the navigation, text, mail and other key apps.

Me too. Usually it last the whole day. Now, a fully charged battery barely last half the day. And I mean using it very lightly. As in few text her and there.

Do we have a solution for this battery drain problem?

Also my texting will stop and all entry will disappear. Message will pop that the messaging has stopped. I will reset it and it will work again.

AT&T staff please help....Thanks.

Any word on battery drain? I can't do anything for more than a couple hours away from a charger. I'm getting 7 hours max standby time. If I actually use the phone it drains much faster.

Anyone know what "com.sec.android.providers.downloads" is? This kept my phone awake for 45 minutes overnight.

I am also having the SD card problem, it unmounts everytime my screen turns off. It always comes back (so far anyway), but I have to wait for it to reinstall the card. This probably isn't good for the battery either. I have sent a private message to AT&T about this, but haven't received a response.

I think the main reason for increased battery drain after the Jelly Bean 4.1.2 update is because some sync/update services are turned on by default.  So check all your apps for automatic updates and adjust the frequency and type of update.  This might include apps like Google+ (timeline, photos), Dropbox, Gmail/other email.  Also, check your accounts sync to make sure that you're only syncing items you use and want to sync.  By default, when you add a Google account, every sync options (mail, calendar, photos, magazines, movies, music, etc.) are all enabled.

If you're still getting battery drain, check your battery itself to see if it's bulging at all.  I took a phone to an AT&T device service center for something else, and the rep saw my battery and told me I need a new one because the old one was bulging out due to repeated heat/use/recharge.  It was about a year and a half old and already out of warranty, but they gave me a new battery free of charge.  It's cheaper for them to give you a free battery and have a happy customer.  So you may try to get a new battery.

Not sure about the SD card issue. Could it be loose or something? Mine only remounts when I restart the phone.

Thanks for the tips.

As for the battery, I turned off auto update for all apps. Hopefully that will help, but they should only have been updating on wifi which I am not on most of the time. My sync options are the same as they were before the update. I have most of the AT&T and Google apps disabled.

The battery isn't bulging that I can see.

My SD card has never been loose before update, I took it out and reinserted to be sure, now it won't remount at all. Joy.

Blackdog112, did you get a fix for your sd card problem? This is what mine is doing now.

No. I don't have a fix.  I sent a PM to customer support just a few minutes ago.  Hopefully they can help.
