A second question: Is it "necessary" to use the disc supplied by AT&T? Am I missing anything by not installing it on my computer?

Hello - I probably have the least amount of knowledge on these forums, so you could never waste my time!

Thanks-but it must just be me and lack of understanding that comes with old age. I go to Computer, and my HTC device is there, active sync is on, but I have/see no way to get the files to there. Is there another place in the forum that I can get some more "simple" assistance? All of you here are so knowledgeable and I don't want to take up your time to have you "dumb down" instructions for someone who is just plain confused. Not a newbie to downloading things to a Mobile phone or to file transferring-I just am new to my Tilt and want to customize it for me.
A second question: Is it "necessary" to use the disc supplied by AT&T? Am I missing anything by not installing it on my computer?

When you go to Computer and see the HTC device, click on it to open it up in explorer. You should be able to see the various folders on your phone including the storage card (if you have one). You can then drag the cab file to the folder on your phone where you want to store it (I suggest creating a folder named cab files or something, and placing it onto your storage card).
Then from your phone, navigate to that folder and tap on the cab file and it will install itself. You will then be prompted to choose where to install the program (either main memory or storage card). Once you make the choice and the installation is complete, power down the device and then turn it back on and enjoy!
As for the disc, I don't even remember what came on the disc. It may include a PDF of the manual and Active Sync (I think a trial of Outlook 2003 was also included). I didn't use the disc with my Desktop (using Vista) and everything works fine.

- Download the .cab file of interest to your computer and take note of there it is being downloaded to so that you can find it. I have a directory in my Documents folder called "Cab Files." In Vista the folder is Documents, if you are using Windows XP then it is "My Documents."
- Connect the Tilt to the PC and let the sync process complete.
- Start Windows Explorer on your computer.
- Find and highlight the .cab files of interest on your computer.
- CTRL + C to copy the files.
- Find the Tilt using Windows Explorer and go to where you want to copy the files to be that on a storage card or directly onto the Tilt such as in the My Documents folder. I would copy them to a folder named Cab Files on a storage card.
- CTRL + V to paste the files.
- After the files are copied you can disconnect the Tilt from the computer.
- On the Tilt, Start > Programs > Tools > File Explorer and then navigate to wherever you copied the files to on the Tilt.
- Using the stylus or your finger tap the .cab to be installed and follow the onscreen instructions.
- After installation you need to soft reset - push the stylus tip into the small hole at the bottom of the Tilt.

You are more than welcome. In order to make Spb Mobile Shell show up when you turn the phone on (or simply wake up the phone), do the following from within the Mobile Shell interface:
Hula 2 Pahoa wrote:
Again many thanks! Now that I have an intuitive interface with large graphics rather than small print on my home page, please tell me how to make this the "default" screen when I turn the phone on? I really like this SPB Mobile-fun and bright and, as I said, intuitive! I would much rather see this when I turn on the phone, even though I did love the waterfall background, the text was white and small.

Go to Settings>Spb Mobile Shell>Now Screen Tab and check "Show the Now Screen when device wakes up". Now whenever you wake up or turn on the device, you will come to the "Now Screen" (Where your missed messages and calls are displayed).
Oh, and usually when you see me posting anything worthwhile it is because I am repeating advice/instructions that were given to me. You will find that the people on this forum are very patient and helpful so keep asking questions - that's how we all learn!!!

Ok, I am now an official downloading fool for my Tilt and I am going to use it more often. It has my former area code and phone number in case someone calls from back there. I also use it as a phone referral number.
Now, my question should be easy for you gems to answer. I like the SPB mobile Shell alot. But, before I commit to buying it, I would like to know if there are more of this type of app out there that are freeware-not free to try then buy. If so, I would like to take a look at them. If not, then I will buy this one. Hard to know if it is right if I have not seen others.

What exactly do you like the most about Mobile Shell? Is it just having access to all of your shortcuts, messages and contacts from the Today Screen? If so, then you can also check out the HTC Home Screen along with the HTC Home Customizer. Also, look at this thread for some ideas regarding good Today Screen programs and ways to get the most out of them. You'll also find out a lot more about these two programs as well.

This is a little program that I love called cLaunch. I currently have it taking up the bottom 25% of my screen (size is adjustable), but holding 16 shortcuts - Thanks to Lkc.

With Spb Mobile Shell, you actually have two different "default" screens: The first is the Now Screen, where the clock is displayed along with your missed emails, texts, and calls (and your closest appointments at the bottom). The other screen is your normal Today Screen. This is where you currently see the Start Menu, Win icon, date, time, etc. To place the "tabbed view of Spb Mobile Shell on the Today Screen do the following: Go to Start>Settings>Personal>Today>Items Tab and take note of what is checked. Check Spb Mobile Shell and anything else that you want displayed along with it. You can also rearrange the items that are listed. If you have already installed cLaunch, check that box and follow Lkc's instructions in this thread (post 25) to configure it to look like the picture below.

I like things that are easy to install without a lot of hassleI looked at the HTC things and they were OK but I also like the SPB Mobile and the iPhone imitator. I am trying that one. My only problem with both the SPB and the iPhone look alike is that, even after carefully following the instructions you gave me, neither one is "up front" when I turn the phone on. I did the soft resets as told, as well. Is it possible that, even though I followed things step by step, something got messed up? All I see is the default screen that came installed with the phone-Start,Win icon, date, time, etc. Mahalo again for the Newbie assistance you all are providing.
Maybe you have to choose to display the tabbed view of Mobile Shell on the Today Screen before you can set the Now Screen as the default screen after waking up the device. Try it and see. Also here is the picture of my Today Screen with Lordsmiff's Battery Gauge at the very top, Spb Mobile Shell Tabbed View (with Spb Diary, Time, Weather and Backup in the tabs), cLaunch (with 4 tabs holding 4 shortcuts each), and the System Tray at the bottom:

Okay, uninstall the Wisebar programs. Just install cLaunch and follow Lkc's instructions in this thread. Sorry, I forgot to post the link last time. Make sure that you install it to the device rather than the storage card. Don't follow the instructions on the cLaunch page. Once you have it installed and Wisebar uninstalled (with soft resets after each one), then make sure that Spb Mobile Shell and cLaunch are checked under Today>Items.
Hula 2 Pahoa wrote:
KC-something went VERY wrong! I downloaded the iPhone App which also required downloading 2 other apps. It said to install Wisbaradv and Wisbaradv desktop and install those. I did, then I downloaded the iPhone app and installed it. I followed their steps and now I have this HORRIBLE screen!! It is blue and has the Outlook logo, WMP logo and then a thingie (sorry-don't know what to call it) that shows how much room I have left for programs (86.7MB). Also, I am having a very difficult time with my touch screen. It will not allow me to do much of anything. And the buttons on the bottom of the phone are useless because THEY do nothing! And I do like the way your phone looksIf mine could only listen to what I tell it to do
And I hope it is OK to call you KC? I appreciate the help from all of you.

I'm really at a loss about this. I don't know what those programs did (or if it was something else) because I have never installed them. If no one else can come to the rescue, you may have to do a hard reset and we can start over with a clean slate.
Hula 2 Pahoa wrote:
OK-this is going to sound crazy to you and everyone else who is reading this threadI can't find settings/system/remove programs. I have "start" at the top of the screen in very small letters, but when I tap on it, it does nothing-nada-zip! It is like it is dead. Now I can click on the little icon of the phone (thingie) and it brings up a list of things like applications, cab files, etc. Nothing is working the way it was before I downloaded the apps for the iPhone look-alike! I can't even access the SBMobile app to bring that up. It is showing up, but when I tap on it, It wants to install the program again! For pity's sake, I really gummed the thing up because I could not make up my mind

Talk about wonky, now the start page has the 4 icons slanting to the left of the screen! So, the last 2 you can't even tap!
I promise I will NEVER install a program on this phone that is not "all in one"! Argh!!!

Okay, just do the hard reset and follow the instructions for both programs and see if we can get this going.
