So I am a fairly basic user. I really would love to get update from Gingerbread to ICS. Yes I am aware I could get it from XDA, but I keep finding posts from spring of this year stating AT&T planned a release for 4.0 on this phone which was a selling point for me. That said, AT&T, are you ever actually planning on an update, a release for ICS on the Captivate Glide, I love this phone but don't want to mess around with the listed issues from XDA, such as backlighting on slideout keyboard and possible freeze issues. Or is AT&T just going to not bother with the update and forget about this phone which is the only slide out keyboard for Android left on the market?

I have been wondering the same thing for a while now.
The promised ICS ugrade was a big selling point for me onthe Captivate Glide.
Its been 6 months and Google has already done their next point release with Jelly Bean.

I realize AT&T has to prioritize QA and updates based on various factors, including # of handsets out in the world, etc, but c'mon 6 months is a long time!
I'll take what you've got even if its a little buggy...you can update with pushed fixes.
Or better yet please give us Jelly Bean!

Remember when you update, to factory reset your phone after you do it. A lot of users a re reporting the backlight isn't working after the update, so you might want to hold off unless you dont care about a backlit keyboard

Problems exist with this update. As one other user here said, the backlight on the physical keyboard no longer works. Also a process force closes at the end of each phone call. This update was NOT properly tested before release. Calling AT&T won't help, as they just tell you to call Samsung instead. So, once again Samsung botches an update, and AT&T leaves us hanging as well! Why did it take so long to get the update? You would think they were testing it this whole time. Evidently not, since something so simple as keyboard backlighting was missed.
I recommend NOT loading this update until they release a corrected firmware for the phone. The rest of us will be left to loading hacks to fix it, or waiting for a fix (if it ever comes).

Hopefully when they fix the bugs, they also fix KIES because I cannot connect to my phone (as well as may others from what I hear) using that useless peice of software. Maybe make it OTA since 99% of us who have this phone have a data package. AT&T should not make it count against your data download since this 'upgrade' clearly isn't ready for primetime.
If anybody has a workaround for the KIES thing, please post it here. I'd be interested in at least backing up my stuff just in case something bad were to ever happen.

I did the ICS update using Samsung Kies. The only issue I ran into was:
If you are using App2SD or a similar app that moves apps to the memory card, you should move ALL apps back to the phone before plugging into the USB (with Samsung Kies running). Once I approached the upgrade in this manner, it was a snap!
Love the ICS upgrade! It's faster, brighter and has better power management (plus a bunch of additional goodies!).

I also upgraded my Samsung Galaxy Note to ICS, where I also ran into this issue. Once I relocated all the apps to the Phone, the upgrade proceeded without a hitch.
