Note the article date: January 25. and yes, it it now illegal to (carrier) unlock your phone.
There was a petition to the Whitehouse with more than 112 thousand signatures to reverse this. (don't hold your breath.)
I linked to that article from another and didn't catch the date. ![]()

Ladies and Gentlemen, And most importantly, Jamileh... I rest my case.
On 2/25, Jamileh made a statement that the comments in this thread will give her "a lot of weight to place on hot topics like this."
On 2/27, I said, "Is that so? Both of AT&T's customers who bought a Galaxy Rugby Pro must have carried a ton of weight to get their update so long ago."
I was making the point that no amount of outrage from us on these forums will expedite the update process. And we have further proof of that today, with the Xperia TL update being pushed by AT&T. I remember seeing one or two threads with no responses this past week asking about the Xperia update.
So I rest my case. I'll keep posting, and I hope everyone else does too. But I will not accept the lies that our update will come faster as a result.
Actions speak louder than words. We've heard the words AT&T. Now it's time for you to back them up.

So, now a phone that was released last Nov 2012 has the update and we still wait. There are no valid excuses at this point anymore. There has been plenty of time to get this update "certified" for the HOX. I guess Ill just have to deal with getting text messages late on a regular occurrence. Don't bother calling ATT, the rep will be clueless and tell you that you've already had 5 replacement phones. The replacement phones she was talking about were the phones that I've had since 2006, you can't fix stupid!

Beaten once again. Let's look at this from another perspective... Perhaps the Xperia XL update was the one holding up things and the One X update is now sailing through validation to be released?!?! Nahhh...

What I don't get is that it's now being reported that we will get the new features of the HTC One (Sense 5) sent to our phones as updates too. http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/smartphones/1298317
How is that even possible if we can never get the Jelly Bean update?

The articles about this, in general, don't talk about carrier branded handsets. Based on this fiasco, we will never get the sense 5 updates.

Well, let's see. If this is so, Sense 5 should be in "certification" at AT&T until, oh, I wanna say, maybe the year 2021? Perhaps they're waiting for this thread to remain quiet for 24 hours before releasing Jelly Bean. They certainly wouldn't want to "empower" their customers by releasing it after all these comments. We might get big heads. So, lets try some reverse psychology! Nobody say nothing for 24 hours and see what happens! ![]()

This is actually the article I was trying to link. Seems to mee if the cares about this perhaps they could... Oh, Wait, this is the Federal Communications Commision... Right... that blocks AT&T whenever possible.

Bootloader is part of the phone internal OS, phone that you own. SIM card in the contrary belongs to the Company.

Don't hold your breath thinking At&t is in any way impacted by this thread, bbb complaints, or posting on other sites. At&t knows it is dead last in customer service. It is not a part of the corporate philosopy of At&t to consider their customers which is clear from the handling of this update and other issues. We will get the update I believe. HTC will be the ones who lose out in the end as no one or very few original One X owners on At&t will purchase their phones in the future. Hope they do well on TMobile and Sprint because they are done on At&t especially when the Galaxy S4 and next Iphone debut. Too bad. they make great phones!

True, rooting your phone WILL void your warranty. That means they will not honor your warranty if they FIND OUT that you rooted your phone.
On a completely unrelated topic. Say I had my own, valid and approved, copy of the update that at&t had prepared, and before I updated my phone to it, i backed it up to the state it is in before I updated. Then if something happened and i had to restore said back up, it seems that at&t would never know i installed this supposed update. Come to think of it, I guess that would apply to any rom you put on the phone, but you should not put that OTHER rom on there, because even though they would not you had done that after having restored the backup, it would void your warranty (given that you confessed to using the rom they didn't know you had installed)
So you should definitely NOT go the tempting, and extremely easy and proven, route of backing up your pre update phone and installing Viper XL by team Venom which seems to get nothing but praise from the others here. You should be patient and wait for the promised update which I sure will not only be available soon, but just as good as Viper XL by Team Venom. Because I would hate the frustration of this forum to build to the point that it became a page of helpful tips for people to root their phone.
Keep up the good work AT&T!
1. You're hilarious.
2. I'm so scared. I don't want to brick it. You just wanna remotely access my desktop? =D
3. I submitted to BBB. I feel so unloved by AT&T. This past month celebrated my 8th year of having a cell phone, which has been through them/Cingular. 9 phones later (for only me) and 7 lines (smartphones) currently in service, and I can't even get a straight answer.

This article does not deal with SIM unlocking it's about carrier unlocking. The SIM card I agree belongs to the carrier as it should, however, they are trying to say that the device Android firmware, being locked to one carrier, falls under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and makes it illegal to bypass DRM (Unlock), however, technically it remains legal for you to jailbreak and / or root and / or flash your phone, but it won't be legal to unlock your phone unless you get your carrier's permission first. Like that's really going to happen. This only applies on devices sold after January 26th 2013. All devices sold prior to that are automatically grandfathered in.So regardless of what firmware is on the device, as long as the device is still carrier locked the DMCA will be satisfied.

It is only illegal to unlock a sim (not with approval from the carrier) only with phones purchase after Feb 15 (or thereabouts) of this year.

This blows all of the "we're still testing" excuses away:
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2013/03/01/att-htc-on
First paragraph:
3/01/13
The Sony Xperia TL, a device that arrived on AT&T back on November 2nd, has received its Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update today, meaning that the device has beaten the AT&T HTC One X to the Jelly Bean punch.

Well, many of you won't even recognize my name any longer as I haven't posted in nearly two weeks. Frankly, that is because I don't care about AT&T or the HTC One X anymore. I went out & paid cash money for a qudband international LTE Samsung Galaxy Note 2 & cancelled my AT&T account, along with the three lines my family uses. They tried to charge me a cancellation fee, stating that I had extended my contract, which was a lie, they extended it after it had lapsed & I was essentially going month to month. You see, I pay unsubsidized dollars for my devices, including the S3 & One X I had, along with my family phones. They eventually saw this & relented.
Furthermore, I am so upset with AT&T that today my two partners met with me today & we had the Verizon sales guy in to talk plans & numbers. Verizon for business is getting more competitive finally. We are changing at the end of March no matter what, either moving to Verizon, which is what one of my partners wants to do, the other is undecided as I suggested that we institute BYOD or give employees the option of buying, or we will possibly subsidize their BYOD devices using unlocked Quadband world phones. With number portability, it now allows us the option to really make smarter decisions. Whether we use Straight Talk or allow employees to find the best deal on any GSM provider, it will be saving us headaches, money & most of all, it will cost AT&T something, which is all I can hope to do at this point, inflict whatever financial pain I can in a legal manner. Those alongside my 3 home lines will total 57 lines AT&T will have lost as a direct result of their horrible customer service. Further, I have also dumped AT&T U-Verse for internet & TV. I am having the cable guy out Monday for internet & my TV dollars will now go to Amazon, NetFlix, Hulu.
As one of the owners of the bandwidth, all Americans are, I am going to do whatever I can, start petitions, talk to politicians, write letters, make calls & write posts, demanding competition & putting an end to long term leases of bandwidth. These companies have been allowed to create monopolies & they have become complacent as a result of not having to truly compete. We pay roughly 50% more for internet & cellular data service in the US as compared to Europe because there is no true competition. AT&T doesn't have to earn their bandwidth leases, they just grease the wheels of bureaucracy with lobbyist & campaign donations & do what they like with our public bandwidth. AT&T overcharges us for the use of publicly owned airwaves, yes they own some of the infrastructure, but some of it was from public funding as well & without our part, they could not operate. It took Android laying with the devil to finally take off, but we are paying for it now & this is why Google tried like crazy to get this thing going without carrier involvement. The price paid for quicker distribution is too high & it hurts everyone involved, aside from the AT&T execs who take home millions in bonuses regardless of how poorly the company is regarded by consumers. It is hard to vote with your wallet in a rigged market, but I am going to do my darnedest to keep my dollars out of AT&T shareholders hands & I encourage you all to do the same. Blog, write letters & call your congressional representatives & senators. Write the president & comment on the "we the people" website. Complain to the FCC & anyone else you can find that may listen. We need more competition & we need to end extended term bandwidth leases. If companies want to use public resources, then they need to earn that right every few years.
Good luck to those of you that stay here with AT&T.
jamileh ...Good luck to you too. You know the first time we spoke it was about a contest, where I won a device for a friend who's daughter was fighting stage 4 cancer. That was cool, aside from getting the W2-G, adding to my already high tax burden. But that's what I get for entering someone else into a drawing. If I were you, I would offer your services to Straight Talk or MetroPCS. Some up & coming company that you can help forge in the manner we all would like to be treated. Don't waste your time with AT&T. I can see it now, the year 2018, MetroPCS is the largest US carrier with the highest satisfaction rating in North America & Jamileh, Executive Vice President of Marketing & Public Relations, for MetorPCS. At the very least, find yourself a lifeboat Rose, the Titanic is sinking.

Its funny I have also found myself exploring the jungle with this viper haunting me wherever I went. I was so scared of it, but I got ahold of my friend TEAM NOCTURNAL, if you dont know him or how to contact him he is available on the TUBE designed for YOU, and he managed to explain very simple the best way to flash these giant vipers until they get off your back. I am incredibly happy.

I did it, I finally did it! I terminated my contract. At first AT&T was great to me but recently, that has changed. I really wish we could have made this work and I could have continued with them but oh well. I'll be dumping my htc one x for a nexus and join straighttalk. Sad to say but I hope you all do the same.

Sense 5 has only been confirmed for the international variant of the One X, not the American AT&T version. (Even if the American One X does get it, it'll probably be 2015 before it does)
