Only problem is that I don't think these steps for manual update work. People are reporting all sorts of errors when attempting it. Has anyone actually been successful?

Just talked to AT&T support; i have been trying to "check of update" and all I have got so far is "nothing"
agent: I am so sorry for the wait. Here are the steps for the update. Tap Menu. Tap Settings. Tap AT&T Software update. Tap Check for updates.
myself: i have done that atleast 100 times
myself: tried factory reset
myself: and interesting thing is that, even if switch off wifi and mobile data, and then try to check update, it still does not give any message
myself: i am wondering if my phone is bad
myself: i dont think check update is doing anything....
agent: Have you tried Powercycling the device.
myself: does that mean restart ?
agent: Yes. I do believe you cannot be on wifi.
myself: i have restarted many times
myself: what do you mean cannot be on wifi
agent: You should try with the wifi turned off?
myself: did that also
myself: with and without wifi
agent: Are you getting a error message?
myself: nope
myself: does not give me any message
agent: After researching, there is nothing wrong with the phone. This is a known issue with HTC customers. The servers are very busy because everyone is trying to get this update. You will just have to wait.
agent: This update just became available as of yesterday.
myself: should it not give an error msg atleast
agent: No it will not give you a message.
myself: how long do i need to wait
agent: That would be at your discretion. Until you get through.

Typical AT&T CSR. Told you the exact opposite of what is true. The fact is, you have to be on wi-fi to do an uodate.

Appreciate your input anyway. I'll probably wait a few more days before trying that as a last resort.

Try Carbon backup, it seems to be the best non-root backup solution.

For those still not getting the update, just keep wearing your fingers out on "Check for Updates"
, the new update is worth it - much much faster and the lag issues I had are gone.

Uh, I just downloaded and installed the update and now my phone won't turn on...at all. I've plugged it in, pressed the power button 94495934 times, tried to go into bootloader...nothing. My phone had like 85% battery when I downloaded the update, so the battery couldn't possibly have died. What gives??? How the heck does an official AT&T update brick your phone?

factory reset does not help with either the OTA or the manual update. I tried both.
I think that we've pretty much concluded that the manual ROM update is broken. The OTA is just going to take some time. Server capacity is a finite thing.

HTC OTA Link here: [link to executable removed for security - please link to landing page]
http://donandroid.com/manually-install-att-one-x-e
vita-jelly-bean-update-919
Follow the steps.
The official landing page is:
http://www.htc.com/us/support/news.aspx?p_id=464&p
_name=htc-one-x-att Hope this helps!
Except HTC does not include a link to manually download the file on the page. Donandroid does.
Yes but, if you can do it the HTC way it will be an (official) OTA and will preserve all your data on the phone while, it is my understanding, if you do a zip file install it will overwrite everything. (I may be wrong.)

In theory, the manual installation using recovery of this ROM image is just doing the same thing that the OTA does without the OTA file copy. The RUU (ROM Update Utility) that HTC will release in the next few weeks WILL WIPE ALL DATA FROM THE DEVICE AND RESET IT TO FACTORY. The RUU is an .exe and the device must be connected to a Windows PC via USB with the drivers installed. I think there is a step missing in this procedure or something is amiss. I'm looking into it further... stay tuned.

That's what I mean, though, with the dondroid.com link: it provides a .zip file, not a .exe file. I think you need the .exe from HTC to actually run, which is what the earlier 2.20.xxx.x update was.
And I'm aware that it does a full wipe, though it's a good reminder. Personally, I just want 4.1. I am willing to accept a full wipe to get it. :-)

The OTA method copies the .zip file to the device and uses recovery to install it from there. The RUU method (PC based .exe) actually uses ADB to load the ROM to the device and then uses recovery to install it from there.

I just want the newest update provided in the same way. I don't care if I have to wipe it to do it. It would alleviate some of AT&T's server loads to send some of that traffic to other modes of upgrade.

I agree 100% Usually HTC will make the RUU available around the same time as the OTA but I have not seen any mention of it yet. I'll keep looking over the weekend and post here if I find anything. I actually prefer the RUU method as it saves me a step since I wipe before and after anyway.

Is anyone else having WiFi issues? My WiFi status keeps randomly going away and coming back. I know it's a bug, but it better be fixed fast. I need to connect to the internet without it randomly cuting off.

Try this:
Go to Settings, tap Wi-Fi
on the next screen tap the Menu (3 dots ) in the upper right corner. Tap Advanced on the drop down.
There is an option Best Wi-Fi Performance – Check it. (your battery life may head South...)
You may also check on the setting for Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep
That did it for me. (Although I scaled it back down as I don't use much data and battery life is most important for me.
)
