The one I got called fancy widget and the clock/weather widget is exactly like the Spencer one. It says its not available due to HTC cease and desist order, but worked for me. I Googled it and a site that had the barcode on the screen which I scanned and it took the phone right to it. When u Google it look for the one on androidcommunity.com scroll down past the screenshots and there is the barcode! I use the att scanner app from the market. Does anyone know why I does say I'm posting from a HTC hero?
Look at your setup and see if you have a "Signature" setting in your account settings. If you do, it has probably been defaulted to what you are seeing. Change it to whatever you want it to say.

I don't know guys (and gals) ....I'm still not too convinced on the Captivate yet. Im seeing Verizon coming out with these Monster phones such as the Droid X and Droid 2. What is the #5 Android phone coming to ATT????? Even the EVO is getting Android 2.2 in early August.

The Captivate is a nice phone except for one thing- I was playing with one in a corporate store yesterday (returned my EVO to Sprint) and the metal back panel is WAAAAAAYY to easy to scratch. I think I am going to wait until Gingerbread comes out before giving Android another try.

Many cell phone articles containing "hot" news like new phone releases are based primarily on rumor, or dodgey insider info. Unless it says "official" or "confirmed" by the carrier, you have to take them with a (big) grain of salt. This would be the case with the article at the start of this thread.
Latest word is the Desire is only headed to "select regional carriers" (i.e. small cell companies, and none of the big ones) this month. With a limited release like this, its starting to look unlikely that the big carriers will pick up the Desire. But you can always hope, right?

Why would any of the big companies carry the Desire? They all have phones that are better then it right now.
Might as weel focus on what is coming down the pipe that we know about.
Sony Ericcson X10 - Would have been nice at the beginning of the year. As of right now it is a non event that AT&T is getting it on Sunday.
Dell Streak - A phone I could get excited about, wspecially with the new upgrade to 2.1. Coming in September. IMO the price is too high for this phone. The 5 inch screen is not worth $100 more.
I am up for a new phone at the end of August. Right now the Captivate is at the top of my list. I was considering the Tilt 2 for a penny, but everyone is telling me I will have major phone envy until my next upgrade period ... lol.

ATT doesn't have anything better than the Desire (I think I would consider the Captivate to be comparable). Agreed, it would be nice moving forward to have a 1.2 or 1.5 GHz Snapdragon device to look forward to. But it unfortunately will probably be a long time until we see something like that on ATT. My hope (like others) would have been for the Desire to have been released already, or in the very near future. Which is just not going to happen.
COncerning the Tilt2 purchase, I've seen posts on XDA stating your upgrade priviledge was not needed to get the Tilt2 for a penny. One guy had just used his upgrade a month ago, and was still able to get the Tilt2 for a penny. Although, I don't know how it would work to buy the phone, and still make sure that your upgrade isn't used up for a FUTURE purchase.

Also, the penny deal is not listed anymore, at least in my area. It might be too late?

From what I've been reading today the HTC Desire HD is the MyTouch HD for Tmobile and is dropping in late September. AT&T should hop on this and get their version pushed too...the android lineup here is pretty pathetic, even with the new Samsung device. I brought over my Nexus One from T-mobile and even without 3g it's still the best android phone 'on' AT&T.

So T-Mobile gets to get a top notch high end device (running FroYo) while here at AT&T, we are dusting the cobwebs off of the Xperra X10 and the Dell Streak which are both running Android 1.6.

Are you serious? I thought about getting a Desire myself. Did you order the A8183 version? I was told that was the US version. If you just switched out your SIM card from your previous phone, I would think you can still use the exsisting plan on your Desire. If you told ATT that you had an HTC Aria, they should be able to give you a plan. Let me know. On another note, I was told by an ATT rep today that there are two more Android phones coming to ATT, one will be the NEW Samsung Galaxy (different from he Captivate) being that it would be slimmer, faster, better resolution, better GPS, rounded edges like the iphone, and with Flash. He also claimed that its due in late September. He did not know of the other device although he said it was not the Dell Streak. He also mentioned that there will be 3 major updates to the Sony Ericson X10 phone coming out before the end of August. We will see......

no its not the 8183- that one only has the 850 band for 3g, i have the 8182 which is the one released from telus in canda which supports both 850 and 1900. Anyway, you cant say its a aria, they need the imei number, what is really weird is that out of all the phones it happens to be this phone...I guess i could goto tmobile and use it.. not sure what im going to do yet.

That's really weird about the data plan. It goes against ATT's policy where you are required to get a data plan if you switch to a smartphone, regardless of where you obtained it.
I would try to call them again, sometimes the customer service reps are clueless. Or maybe borrow a friend's ATT branded smartphone (so they can read the IMEI) for a day, so you can call them to add the plan?

That's BS, you can use the Desire on AT&T if it's unlocked. AT&T is not CDMA based BS, where they only allow their phones on the network. Call back and get someone who has a clue, and just tell them it's a HTC smartphone and you're not sure the model. I used a Nexus One with AT&T 3G for months with no issues.
Also the post above about AT&T getting another Galaxy S, and the X10 being updated 3 times in a month is BS. Why would they carry two models almost the same, and no they are not launching a keyboard version with Sprint launching the EPIC. Regarding the X10, do you really think AT&T wants to QA 3 software updates?

Is it still worth getting an unlocked Desire to use on ATT? I know most of the PROS, can somebody tell me the CONS besides the high price. ALso, then anyone see this:

If you get the A8182 Telus (Canadian) version, I don't see a significant "con". The Australian A8183 model is being sold on eBay and some websites as being full 3G on AT&T, but it only has the 850 MHz 3G band (as indicated in a reply above), and not 1900 MHz. ATT uses both 850 and 1900 MHz, depending on the location. So you may only be able to use EDGE in your area (or while travelling to other areas in the US) if you buy the A8183.
If you travel internationally on a regular basis, always pay attention to the GSM bands available on the phone you are buying. The A8182 Telus version has the 850/1800/1900 MHZ GSM frequencies, allowing it to work in most countries in the Americas and Europe. But it appears to lack the 2100 MHz needed to work in Japan and South Korea. This is not a concern to the huge majority, but actually is for me.
A unlocked Desire might take a bit of fiddling to get SMS and MMS working properly on ATT. But this is minor, a little research to get the right settings should be the most you would have to do.

Can you provide instructions for changing those settings? I'm looking for a SOLID Android phone on ATT's network with the capabilities of the Desire.

More for you to .... um ... well ... Desire

The Desire Z and the Desire HD. This should be enough to keep this thread going for another year while AT&T refuses to offer this phone ......

So I purchased unlocked HTC Desire A8183. According to the specs it was AT&T network compatible It was supposed to work with AT&T. I have voice service and WiFi is working well. However I am unable to get Mobile Networking to work. Called AT&T support, got all the way to their engineering and they were not willing to help as this is "not AT&T certified hardware". Does anyone have experience with A8183? Is there a way to make it work?
