I just called to see if I could get a JB release date from ATT. "We don't know". Incredible.

I tried the clock trick when I was still on 4.0.4 and mine still crashed. Almost 14 days now for me on 4.0.3 with no reboots and no shutdowns. I think the only way we will get JB is rooting and doing it ourselves. The S4 will come out soon so they want to sell us all new phones. The S2 is still a great phone and so much better than an Iphone when its working right.

I too have all the problems discussed here - Galaxy S2 battery drain and sleep of death. I also have lost Bluetooth capability to work with SYNC in Ford. Will this also be fixed by the forthcoming update? I sure hope so.

It would seem that not only can we not get a fix it appears as though now we are being censored and posts are being removed. Nice we are all begging for help and this is the response.

I did the exact same thing. It seems working. I am posting detailed steps here for anyone who is interested, Please tell us whether this solved your problem.
Please backup everything on your phone memory before you attempt this. This will wipe out your phone completely.
1. Open Samsung Kies as Administrator
2. goto Tools -> Firmware upgrade and initialization
3. Enter the model name SGH-I777 (in all upper case letters)
4. Enter the Serial Number of your phone. This can be found under the batter.
5. Click OK. Then you need to accept the warning and it will tell you which firmware it is going to flash onto your phone. It will be 4.0.4. Accept that as well.
5. It will download the necessary files. At this point you can shut down the phone and remove the battery and re-instert the battey.
6. The while pressing the volume Up and Down keys simultaneously (Not the power button) plug the USB cable. Your phone should boot into download mode. It will display a message Downloading..... on the screen.
7. Start Upgrade button on the Kies upgrade screen should now be activated. If not, you may need to reinstall the USB drivers for i777 and may need to reinstall Kies.
8. Once you hit Start Upgrade button, it will start download the proper firmware from the web and then start sending it to the phone. You will see a progress bar in the phone as well. Sometimes it could give you an error similar to "DLL load faliure..." If that happened, try change the Compatibility mode of Samsung Kies to Windows Vista SP2 and run in Administrator mode. This can be done by right clicking on Kies icon and selecting Properties --> Compatibility tab.
9. Once the Kies finish transfering the firmware to the phone, the phone will start installing it and once finished, it will reboot.
10. I also factory reset the phone after the upgrade by booting into stock recovery console. You can shut down the phone, press Volume UP + DOWN together and press power button without releasing the volume keys. Then select Factory Wipe and hit Power button.
11. I desabled all the AT&T bloatware anyway because I don't like them and use them anyway. I don't know that was the case because it didn't help me earlier.
Now my phone works as it used to be. 4.0.4 seems to have a good battery life even with WiFi switched on all the time. Earlier if I keep WiFi on for few hours it completely drains my battery. I am happy with my phone again.
Thanks scot070 for the wonderful tip.

Thanks for the detailed instructions, neshadha.
I'm a little stumped by the fact that replacing the firmware with the exact same firmware version fixes the problems. Interesting. I wonder if it will degrade over time. Hope not.

Well, I thought I was out of the woods. Not that there was anything I did to fix it, but I just went 6 or 7 days at least, with no problems. Then just now, froze up.
If I don't see JB drop within a week, I'm rooting this thing and installing something that works.
AT&T - first opportunity I get, I'm going to Verizon. Thanks for nothing.

Pretty weird, geetarplayer, that today is the first day that I too found my phone off since I wrote that it was doing so well 4 days ago. We seem to be in sync :-)

Mine is still good running 4.0.3 & rooted. Has been 15 days tomorrow I think. I have not done a single manual restart either, nor have I changed any clock settings or deleted any bloatware. I did disable Acuweather & AT&T hotspots. I forced close on the other AT&T aps. I continue to be happy with the performance now and I have used it heavily at work this week.
I still think the bug is in the 4.0.4 firmware.

I had this issue for months now. Obviously is faulty software that we were forced to install. According the AT&T rep, she indicated a fix would be done in a few weeks. It’s been a week and no update to that post.
I tried all kinds of solutions including purchasing a new Samsung battery and nothing has helped.
Sometimes it happens 2 or 3 times per day and sometimes it can go 3 or 4 days without going into a coma.
I don't think this is a AT&T issue since there are other boards where people that have the S2 with other carries are experiencing the same issue.
Perhaps it’s time to root the phone once and for all…

OK, my countdown starts now. I just flashed an alternative ROM. I'll let you know how it goes. Since I've have strings of a week or more of false success, I won't consider this fixed until I see it working for a month.

OK, I had enough, this is the 3rd phone from att the s2 version 4.0.4, no matter what I do the thing , goes into SOD, I have to remove battery and then start it up, now this is my 3rd phone no apps installed, just the upgrade that came with it.
going to the bb site and attnorney general site to file a complaint, I suggest other do the same, maybe they get off their lazy as@##@!@& and give us a fix, or the JB update.

This is a huge issue. I am now on 4th S2 phone. Get a refurb on 1/24/13. Same issue Sleep of death. But also added issue of batt not showing charge or discharge. irvine tech center said on 2/2/13 the refurb phone was bad (batt new from att). So I kept everything stock on 2/2/13 s2 refurb and only added google drive, google cal and google voice. The phone came from samsung refurb factory with ICS 4.0.3 and seamlessly upgraded OTA wifi to 4.0.4 (same buld all my other SOD S2 phones had) So I followed all the tech guys instructions on battery conditioning. left phone on charged overnight. phone good this am. then all of a sudden while screen was off..yep did it again. Sleep of dealth!!! Its not an app issue. its ICS plus s2 archtecture. seems to only happen on wifi but then again I am on wifi 90% of the time so that may be coincidental. I know people with s3 with no issues on ATT with jelly bean or ICS 4.0.4 befor ethey got 4.1.
So yes att, google and samsung better get this straight or perhaps blackberry and wondows phones will rise? lol

I am also having this same problem. My wife had the S2 [private] and the S3 [for company].. then she got the iphone 5 and did not even once crashed for over 3 mths now.. I had the S2 for about 1yr 2 mths and mine auto shut down even without doing anything and battery is terrible terrible!!!.. missed calls and dropped calls when scheduling surgeries or talking to insurance for medical claims after being place on a 1hr hold. I am so sick of this phone. Yes it is nice to look at sometimes but the problems are frustrating. I cannot wait for this contract to end. My collegue has the galaxy note and he had same issues. Why Samsung.. make things so nice to look at but do not work well. I cannot keep rebooting a phone all the time. Mine shut down 3-4x a day after updating to 4.04. i am so tired of it. Yes I have check so many Android sites and it seems to work for a few days then it is all back to the same. What I need now is a hammer.

The only reliable fix thus far has been to roll back to 4.0.3 or root and use a differnt Rom. My S2 continues to work pretty much perfectly on 4.0.3. Almost a month and not a single reboot. Why can't AT&T or Samsung figure this out too for everyone?

How do you keep it from being auto-updated to 4.0.4? I'm not really privy to how this works... does it alert you that an update is ready, and you can choose to ignore it? I thought I'd seen elsewhere in this thread where people were "forced" to upgrade.

I haven't gotten any notice to upgrade, maybe its because I rolled it back but not sure. I did root mine even though I'm just using the factory rom. Not sure if that makes a difference.
Yeah, I was thinking maybe the rooting made the difference. Have you done a "check for updates" at all, just to see what it says? Or are you scared to? Don't blame you if you are. :-)

[quote]please tell me how to roll mine back to 4.0.3[/quote]
I filed a complaint with attoney general and had the president of att secratary call me, she said to call samsung and request a different model and if they ok it, they will send me another model out.
the number to att president [Edited to comply with Guidelines]
I suggest everyone call the president secratary number, flood the number and maybe they will get this fixed.

I dont want to hassle trying to get back to 4.0.3. What pi_ses me off is the last two refurb phones I got came from samasun refurb with 4.0.3 std on the phone. but when I got home it automatically upgraded to 4.0.4. sigh
Oh and I told the moderator to please repost her post below at the start of the thread so epople know what is up
No word yet ona date or if this means we go to 4.0.5 or of this is just a patch for the s2. I know two people on att s3 with no shutdown issues. so the 4.0.4 likely did it to the s2 which is just too old to take the latest upgrade. I know we will not be getting 4.1 but 4.0.5 or 4.0.6 might help. Again as these fixes have to be blessed by google, samsung AND att it takes forever

Hey guys...
Great news
We worked with Samsung to research this issue and a fix will be available in the coming weeks. I don't have any specific dates just yet but as soon as I do, I'll post them here.
I want to note that this is a direct result of you discussing this issue in the forums and telling us what you are seeing. Great job.

I think the "fix in a matter of weeks" is total B***Cr**. No mention of whether they've reproduced this problem? No mention of Jelly Bean fixing this problem? No mention of JB being rolled out at some date soon (it's already rolled out to S2 devices in other countries). The lack of communication about this problem and solution tells me there is very little substance behind this promise.

ill just wait. I dont want to be rooting and screw up my 90 day warranty.

I saw a post in one of these threads to try to go back to 4.0.3 from 4.0.4 via kies. I dont see that as possible either. Also lots of people have osted "fixes" which did not work for me

My S2 has not had an SOD for more than 2 weeks. I posted before what I did the only thing I left out was that I have not turned on my wifi. Wifi could very well be the problem.
Here's my previuos post.
01-26-2013 03:58:24 AM
This worked for me:
1. Settings, factory data reset. Back up before doing this. I thought it would reset to GB but it reset to ICS 4.04
2. Reinstall my apps.
3. Delete any battery saving apps like Juice defender or battery indicater apps.
4. Uninstalled updates, cleared data and then disabled all ATT apps like Att Smart wifi, code scanner, family map, hot spots navigator, Qik lite, social hub, google play books magazines movies and tv and google+, Live TV , Movie hub. i dont use any of those apps anyways. Also delete any apps you don't use. Why have them if you dont need them.
I can't think of anything else I did. I havent had a SOD for over a week now!

@neshadha, thanks for taking the time to post the detailed instructions. It was extremely helpful. I was amazed that I even got Kies to cooperate for this re-download. Prior to the re-download, I had tried all the solutions people were suggesting. The phone was shutting off less and less as time progressed, but it still happened about once every two days. Even though I have an i9300, the SGH-i777 is truly special as to input response "snappiness." I might add that at step 9, I had to disconnect the USB cable before the phone rebooted. Prior to disconnecting the USB cable (there was a Kies message saying the same), the i777 screen was alternating between images of a charging battery and the Android robot with spinning internals. There also seemed to be a installation/downloading progress line at the screen's bottom. Played it safe and left the cable connected but no change after a few hours. Disconnected cable and the phone rebooted. Doing a factory wipe next.
