I am also facing the shut down issue ever since they upgraded to android 4.0.4. AT&T does not agree that it is their firmware issue.
They told me to get the cell phone factory reset. That does not help Either, since I tried that too. I wish AT&T provides an update to jelly bean. Expecting some good response from them since it is really very frustrating to get ur cell phone shut down missing crucially calls.

My shut downs got a lot better after I did a master reset restore. Went almost two days solid without a shut off. Battery life has also been much better. Last night I disabled all the AT&T apps so I'll see if this helps too. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I have the same problem with my Galaxy SII phone. However if I keep the power button pressed for a long time (about 10 seconds) it shuts down so that I can start it again, that way avoid opening up the battery. The battery life used to suck before but now this new problem is insane. I have missed important calls because of this. I think the new update to 4.0.4 is causing this but not sure. Is there any fix for this?

I am having the same issue. I don't have that much at all running on my phone but this is real annoying. Does anyone have a fix or have you heard from AT&T on how to fix it. I don't think I can switch phones because this is a work phone and they make me keep it for 2 years.

Same issue here, called/chat with the support tech and we are doomed, they do not have an answer and they are not willing to do anything, my cell is 1 month out of warranty and that's enough to say we are not responsible.
They are trying to tell me that its Samsung fault, I told the guy, ATT approved the firmware and it was downloaded using the ATT update feature not KIES or Samsung URL.
His best solution is to give me a FREE two year contract renewal.
I need a reliable patch or come on ATT release 4.1.X
What a joke ... but sure my bill is ready !!!

I was finally able to get my S2 to stop rebooting... by taking the sim card out. It doesn't do me any good now, but it also doesn't reboot constantly.
Previously it didn't matter if I was in airplane mode, 3g, or 4g, it was rebooting. Without an AT&T sim card inserted, it's working like a champ. Go figure.
I'd like to see if this works for anyone else. It would certainly pin down the source of the issue to AT&T, it may also show that the root cause is a failing or corrupt sim card, which is much easier to replace than a phone.

My phone has been doing this since November it got worse after the last update! I called AT&T they decided to replace my phone, thinking that there was a glitch with my phone, however I don't think it was a glitch with my phone. I recieved my new phone on Friday, Today I started having the same issues, phone shutting down by itself. It just did it twice in a row and kills my battery each time! I;m so frustrated with this phone, I just want a new phone, but of course cant do that without having a upgrade til next year

Mine has done it twice today already. I did forget to disable the AT&T bloatware apps so maybe thats why. Each time you restart or reboot the AT&T apps will start back up so they have to be disabled again. Still trying to figure out if the AT&T apps are causing the issue or not. I really don't want an Iphone again but they do seem to be trouble free and I need my phone to work as I use it in my business.

I also started having this problem after the 4.0.4 update. I cleared the cache on the phone multiple times and did a factory reset but the phone kept shutting itself off. I then called AT&T, told them my situation and everything I had done, and then quickly forwarded me to their warrenty department to get me a new phone.
I got the new phone and the problem persists. Taking the advice of someone from a different forum, I disabled every AT&T and Samsung app and it has fixed nothing (seemed okay for about 36 hours, but now it has been turning off daily). Talked to AT&T and they told me to remove all downloaded applications, and add them back one at a time with a 24-48 hour span between each. Haven't gotten there yet, but based on all the comments here I'm certain it will do nothing but be an inconvinience.
It seems like the only true solution for now is to not upgrade to 4.0.4. Hopefully this gets resolved quickly - it's completely unacceptable.

I removed the upgrade to this app and that did the trick for me. Now if I could find a solution to "Unfortunately, the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped" I would be a happy camper.

As promised, a follow up on my previous post (on disabling the "AT&T Smart Wi-Fi" application):
It has been about a week, and during that time my phone shut down only twice (as opposed to several times a day prior to disabling "AT&T Smart Wi-Fi"): Once the first day, and once again today. In the meantime, it stayed up several days without any shutdown.
So my conclusion is that while, in my case, disabling "AT&T Smart Wi-Fi" has clearly helped, it looks like the problem is still there. At least this sporadic shutdown is not crippling my cell phone service/experience.
On another note, I am now convinced this problem is directly related to the last OS update from AT&T. AT&T should take its customers seriously and fix the problem.

Unfortunately my phone still shuts down once every two days but ill take that versus once every two hours.
Sometimes my phone shut off every time it went idle but now im able to use it. Taking out sim card would work but my phone wouldnt if i went that route which is what lead me to this fix. Hope this helps everyone

Mine pretty much shuts down once a day now no matter what apps I turn on or off. Still not acceptable. I have emailed Samsung to see if maybe they have a solution since AT&T seems to be no help.

This issue was occuring long before the update. It has been intermitent on my phone for months. With over 100 apps installed no telling if an app is causing the issue..Samsung support suggested starting the phone in safe mode and see if it occurs in safe mode...even if it doesent no way to pin point the app causing the issue. Safe mode also removes all widgets....I like the S2 fine..never wanted to upgrade to S3 want the S4 instead which is supposed to be out in June...but hate this constant battle of the device shutting down and I dont know its down till I pick it up to check messages...or make a call or text.

I think you are confusing "force stop" with "disable" when you say "Each time you restart or reboot the AT&T apps will start back up so they have to be disabled again". If you actually disable an app, it will never start again, even after a reboot.
Go to system settings, applications and click the "all" tab. Make it look like this, and you will see much improvement:

I have had the same issues since the update as well. I've tried disabling the new bloatware but it still shut off overnight. I saw on another forum that someone managed to get AT&T to flash their phone back to 4.0.3 at a Device Support Center, so I'm going to try that in a few days if things don't change.

When I go to "settings", "applications" and "all", I do not see the same screen as you are showing. Mine is the same other than it doesn't show "disabled" or even enabled for that matter. I did find that AT&T Hot spot app had a disable button that I had not done. The other AT&T apps only have a "force close" on them. I pretty much had all the AT&T apps on force close but not the Hot Spot app. Somehow I had missed it so that may have been causing some of my shutdowns. Have it disabled today so going to see if that helps. I know all in all my battery life is 110% better than before and the phone is faster. Had two shut downs on Saturday night but none since so we shall see.

I got my SGS2 in feb 2012 and had no problems until around may/june
auto shut off 1\2 a month and then more often 2.3
Updated ICS, same problems 4.0
Disabled att apps same problems.
Auto shut off 3 times a week
I got it replaced at a repair center 3 weeks ago.
Disabled all att apps and updated 4.0.4
Auto shut off 3 times a week again
return to repair center got battery replaced
1 week without auto shut down
then auto shut down sun, mon, and today (tues)
Warrantry Ends in Fed and Im running out of ideas

So I called yesterday and was told the update that I was forced to download and install and that is also now causing my phone to shut down randomly was ment for the s3. I was then told that my phone was out of warrenty and that i could renew my contract and get the same phone as a curtisy, or pay 199 deductable to get a replacement. All this due to an error by AT&T. I dont understand why they would not allow me to chage phones. My upgrade is due in march why they couldnt just let me do an early upgrade to another phone i dont know. But to get stuck with the same phone for another 2 years is **.
I am going to just pay the early term fee and get out of Att its cheeper than the deductable... I am tired of the poor customer service and the disrespect towards their customers.

I've been having this problem too. I have 2 different batteries, so I doubt it's the battery.
Through support, I've done a phone reset, and then later got a warranty replacement phone. Still doing it. Sometimes it goes a couple weeks, and sometimes it does it every day.
The symptom for me is I notice the phone feels hot. Then I try to activate the screen, and nothing. Then I remove and reseat the battery, and turn it on again. If I don't get to it in time, the battery is drained.
It has NEVER done it while I was actually using it. (which makes me think maybe something that keeps it DOING something may fix this - such as a keepalive app?)
I has done it while not charging, and also it has done it while charging.
ATT said they used to have a policy of letting you upgrade for free if you get a warranty replacement and it is a lemon also. They do not do that anymore.
Not sure what to do at this point.
