questions 1: late, within weeks, I have noticed my S2 will randomly shut itself off. The symptoms seem erratic, I would hear a text, fish from pocket hit power, ....reboot. I dont understand it and will try to do some narrowing of symptoms. Any ideas?
Question 2: I have checked usage on the website here and I would see ENORMOUS data usage and I dont know why. we're talking about 250+ mb in a sitting. i am NOT using my phone that much! Apps that stay on in phone and that are most often used:
Dolphin HD broswer
Thank you for your help!

1. Try to see if it is one of the apps you installed causing the shutdown issue.
2. The built-in AP Mobile app/widget is known to consume a lot of data (a known issue) for some users. The only solution so far is to factory reset and never touch that app or widget. Also, online reporting of data usage is an aggregated data usage for a period of time up to that moment, not just that moment. There is no way to identify the data usage pattern from that online log unless you install an app on your phone to track yourself. But if you're streaming anything (YouTube for example), 250mb isn't that uncommon.

A few follow ups,
In the website data tracking, when using the "media net/ data usage" filter, there are two types, media net and phone
Does "phone" mean an app? Does media net mean the browser I'm using?

No those are two different types of APN configured on your phone. By default, all your internet connections use Phone APN and all MMS and AGPS use MediaNet (wap.cingular APN). MMS is not counted in the data usage. So the only thing that uses MediaNet is GPS SUPL download (to help speed up GPS lock). Basically, everytime you use your GPS, there will be a few KBs of data downloaded through MediaNet. All other internet usages go toward Phone. Both are counted together towards your data cap (if you have one).
With the new LTE version of the GS2 (Skyrocket), it uses a new APN called ptr instead of Phone.

I have had the Galaxy S2 since day 1 (10-2-2011, I believe), and haven't had either of these problems. The first month I only used about 1.2 GB of data. My GS2 has never shut off when I haven't intended it to do so.

Kernel crashes with the stock kernel on an unrooted device scream "hardware defect" to me - I would suggest exchanging the phone.
Unfortunately, one of the debugging mechanisms available for many Android devices to debug kernel crashes like what you are experiencing is not available in the stock kernel...

After 30-day period, you need to contact AT&T warranty serivce for replacement. You have one year warranty on the phone via AT&T. The easiest way to get it exchanged is find a local AT&T device center (if you are lucky) and do the exchange right there. Otherwise, you need call AT&T and they will send you a replacement . Keep in mind that all warranrty replacements are usually refurbished phones unless they run out of such.
Insurance is only used when you have damages (or lost) on the phone that is not covered under warranty.

Oh yea att tells us to do exchange that its just my phone in a million having issues when thats not true as we all know. They sent me another s II just to have the exact same problmes i had with my other on. Shuts down, freezes, have take out battery at times just to get it to work, show i have emais, and texts after I checked them and dont, takes a minute or more to open an app and btw my new ph had only the apps that came on it so whats their excuse now. I spoke to samsung and they know of these issuses that are happening with the ics update. That is why they kept pulling it but no att wants to act like they dont know a thing about this so i have downloaded a bunch of videos from reporters and reputable sources articles to prove it. Im sick of having a defective ph that i know it dont matter how many of the same ph they send me will continue to have the same problems. ATT step up take responsibility and give me a different working phone like the note. Stop acting like this is the first time your hearing about this. I am sick of it. Where is the customer service here.

My stock s2 bricked in the first 60 days. (purch nov 2011 at costco). So they gave me new phone. it was fine for 8 mo then about 3 mo ago I was getting the random shut donws. I have to reboot (press vol key and power key to restart) No reason for it. totally random. Sometimes goes 3 days no prob. Sometimes does it three times in one day. Always when phone is idle and screen is off. Phone is shut down and recharged nightly. No weird apps. no rooting. Its now on ICS 404. So took the phone in on the even of the 1 yr arranty with att and they gave me samsung factory refurb phone and a new batt. Three days later I got the same problem. So now one by one I am removing any non google apps to see if its an app problem. I have 90 days warranty on this refurb phone. I guess I am just having bad luck. Otherwise phone has been great
I wish there was a quicker way to determine problem. I have to rule out hardware as the refurb phone doing same exact thing as last phone on the same OC ICS 404
One thing that I do note is that its almost always on wifi when ot shuts off
I do not have any high data usage. Usually well below 300 mb mo. I use navigation a lot and all the google apps but its on wifi a lot
