ATT is going to charge DOUBLE to UPGRADE your phone from $18 to $36. FOR WHAT is what I'd like to know...and no body is going to tell me it's because of the phones being more sofisticated. What do they actually do when you upgrade uyour phone besides punch some numbers into the computer and move the SIM card??? I would like this EXPLAINED!!![]()

Yeah I think this is a poor decision on att's part.
I most DEFINITELY think so too...my husband is WAY past due for an upgrade..needs a new phone and I'm dragging him to the store TOMORROW. I can see it going up a few dollars but to DOUBLE it is just NUTS!!
Verizon doesn't even do this..they charge a $35 activation fee for new customers but NO upgrade fee...
Is ATT looking to LOSE customers?? I'll tell you what, I wouldn't blame mu\y husband right now if he DID switch to Verizon like he's been talking about.

interesting, there is a 36.00 charge for each phone that we recently upgrade on the verizon account. If this is true then we will have to call them monday and see if we can get our money back from them.

Nope, you only incur an activation fee when you add a line/start new service. You on the other hand will not be faced with any fee to activate your new phone.Source(s):

Just spoke with 2 of my Verizon friends, they are both people that I work with and know very well, and they have NOT been charged upgrade activation fee's. Hope this helps.

I wanted to add my voice to the protest over this fee increase. I don't see how it costs AT&T anything to upgrade a phone, much less $36 per customer. It is interesting that this is the same amount that Sprint recently raised their upgrade fee to. Oligopoly anyone?
My question to the moderators is will this $36 fee apply if you buy the phone at the no-commitment price?

You are not charged an upgrade fee for purchasing at no commitment pricing.
I heard about the upgrade fee increase but don't know why it's being increased as there was no explanation given.
I remember when the restoral fee was increased from $36 to $40. Customers weren't too happy about it but what can they do? It's a fee for not paying your bill, it's understandable and avoidable.
Now when it comes to the upgrade fee increasing, that's definitely a hefty fee just to get a new phone and extend your contract.

Well, I'm glad someone is with me on this...
Personally, I never understood WHY we have to PAY to upgrade when buying a new phone, to be honest. What's that $18, now $36 USED for??
As a matter of fact, I drug my husband for a new phone just LAST NIGHT, because there was NO WAY, I was going to pay a $36 upgrade fee if he decided to go get his new phone today!!! I also voiced my 2 cents to the man helping us and he knew I was NOT a happy camper, and I knew it was not HIS fault. HE mentioned that he didn't think the $36 fee would be around too long because ATT will be losing customers that they are trying to keep....DUH!! Oh, I also asked about having the $18 upgrade fee waived...it didn't happen but I had one waived once...go figure? I wonder how many $36 upgrade fees will be waived for customers??? HA..what a joke....
The thing is...customers DO NOT KNOW about the increase until it's too late. WHERE does it say ANYTHING..a WARNING, per say, TO US unsuspecting customers, that this is going to be increased as of today??? I think that's another thing that I hate about this......
Now that all 3 of us on our plan are in the same general vicinity as to when our 2 years contract will end, 2 years from now, Verizon may possibly be OUR next carrier....

sprint already charges that, verizon in my home ares in nothing better then two tin cans and a string, the cost comes once every two years for the phone, not a big deal in my book and depending on your account status you get get the upgrade waves. Only one I am concerned about is as I mentioned verizon has been charging me a upgrade fee for our corpoarate phones for the last 3 years, if the cost if not in my contract then I will talk to my rep and get it back, if it is true then they owe us a hefty chunk of cash. Amazing how some companies try to get away with things isn't it?

I guess all you can do is ask your rep. Maybe it's different for corporate phones, I don't know but it's worth a shot. Good luck.
Yes, it is amazing how they try to pull one over on us..

I'm probably getting new phones this week but I won't pay the 36 upgrade fee. Is that per line? I'f so I have five lines. If they expect 36 per line that I get new phones on, they can hang that up.
I would suppose it's for every new phone upgrade. That's a HUGE chunk of money if you have 5 to upgrade...

I noticed the same thing. I heard about this on phonedog.com. I think that AT&T didn't want the negative publicity that VZW got when they wanted to institute the $2 bill pay fee on some customers. I actually think that this increased upgrade fee is worse than a bill pay fee.
Since $36 is around the cost for new activations on other carriers, AT&T may see people willing to walk away because of this increased fee.
It's good to know that no-commitment purchases aren't subject to this foolish fee. Most people wouldn't want to pay the extra ~$300 to avoid $36, but there is still the benefit of not being locked into a contract.

I'm going to hate to see this place and all of the complaints when people go to upgrade from here on in...I have a feeling it will be worse that all of the iPhone complaints.
As for the negative publicity, OH, I think there's going to a LOT of that....

Sorry if this does not fit here. But i post here most often.
Is it true that at&t is going to change the upgrade fee to 36.00
from 18.00. I mean at 36 what a rip off. What do they have to
do push a couple of buttons on a computer? Sorry to rant.

Just did the calculations and with 4 lines on my account and my last contract up in July, it's looking like time to move on from the worst customer service in the country. Just too much money.

Update for you - verizon owe my company a hefty chunk of change, the business center reps did not have a copt of the new contract on their system, I have been paying the 36.00 upgrade charge on every phone for the past two years. No one caught it becasue the people that order the upgrades do not get a copy of the bill to verify, that was being done by finance - this proceedure has been restructured and streamlined, to much diversity on the bill payment structure. Thanks to this I have brought in a indepented auditing firm to review all proceedures and streamline where required.
