So i am gonna be on my THIRD inspire, hoping to god it has android 2.2 still on it. Ever since the gingerbread update came out for my phone, my phone is almost unuseable. Maybe im just crazy, but this is what I notice...
The messaging app is all screwed up; when I recieve texts, its just a # and no name which is frustrating, and the even more aggravating issue is when im composing a text and i need to backspace, it doesnt backspace normally instead it throws me out of the text message and wants me to "Delete by selection" meaning deleting other text messages forcing me to close the app and restart it only for the issue to come back instantly. among other things the phone also became more laggy and the signal strength decreased drastically.
The common denominatior here is the update, my phone NEVER did this on 2.2. AT&T says I cant downgrade my phone back to 2.2 and their only solution is to send me refurbished phones with the diseased update already on them, and they wont let me change phones.
C'mon AT&T!!! GIVE ME A REAL SOLUTION HERE, YOUR GONNA LOOSE A CUSTOMER TO SPRINT REAL SOON!

I may have a solution
Step 1: Calm Down
Step 2: Factory Reset your phone, it usually fixes most problems
Step 3: Make sure all your contacts you backed up on your Google account have been restored on your phone
Then try and see if it fixes it....if it doesnt, Ill give you a link on how to downgrade back to the previous OS...and btw...Sprint has horrible service lol

I'm sorry you're having such a tough time with the Inspire's update.
Please take a look at smooth4lyfe's advice and let us know if that helps.
If not, we'll take a look at some other options.

Ive done many Factory resets on the phone, it does not solve anything. I once tried doing 3 factory resets in a row, one after another and the issues came back instantly. I do apologize about blowing up in the OP, but its annoying. Every troubleshooting step i have done myself and with warranty representatives do not solve anything.

No apology necessary, I know you're frustrated.
Why dont you send me a private message with your name, account number, phone number and the best time to contact you?
Let's see if we can get this on the right track.

Try installing the RUU update. Go here:
http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-inspire-4g-att/s
Click "Read more" under the listing for the ROM update, and scroll all the way down for the RUU download.
The RUU way is often better than the OTA update, since the OTA is usually just a patch (which can lead to a big mess); while the RUU is a full wipe, formatting all the partitions, and installing the ROM much more cleanly. The only advantage to the OTA, is that it leaves the user data intact.
I've seen plenty of other HTC devices where people had tons of issues with the OTA update, while the RUU performed just fine. In these cases, a factory reset will not help you, as you are just re-installing the patched ROM again.
Keep in mind that the RUU will wipe all user data (as the instructions state). But if you've tried multiple factory resets, this shouldn't be much of an issue for you.

Thanks, I got it and responded.
Please give redpoint's suggestion a shot in the meantime - that may be able to save you some additional work. ![]()

I personally went through 3 replacement Insprie handsets all of which had the same issue. The phone would reboot itself a few times an hour.
I had to threaten to cancel my contract due to the fact that they could not provide a working warranty replacememt for CS to do something aboout the issue.
I love the phone/data service but at&t's customer service is absolutely horible. Half the time the person cannot speak english and is completely clueless the other half are just completely clueless.

The vivid works great. The Skyrocket I have that i upgraded to ICS is a different story!

I'm glad the Vivid is working for you.
Sorry you're having problems with the ICS update though. If you'd like, you can document your issues in this thread (if you haven't already) - http://forums.att.com/t5/Android-Discussion-and-Su

which department did you get to give you an update, warranty refuses to let me have a new device because i had the inspire as a replacement for my samsung infuse. The RUU Update didnt fix much, im forced to send my phone to htc for repar. I want an iphone 4 or HTC vivid now. I demand an early upgrade but I dont see that happening.

UPDATE: Now my wifi is starting to quit on me and the phone randomly resets itself on top of all the other issues. Because i need my phone, I resorted to buying an iphone 2g (Yes. the very first iPhone ever manufactured) with a cracked screen off of ebay. My inspire is pretty much close to unuseable right now. I have a feeling warranty is gonna force a 6th inspire on me which will be defective, then it will be onto my 7th, 8th, 9th, and prbly soon to be 10th inspire. I'm not too pleased here...

I see you sent an email to Torando on Sunday regarding this new update. I'll let him know you've posted as well.

Like the OP, I was very frustrated with the Inspire and was ready to chuck it into a lake... now, a year later I am still happy with it.
I'm very leary to upgrade to whatever they are trying to push on us INspire users... my phone works fine. If it aint broke, dont mess with it... :-)

Aug 3 installed a "critical software update" from ATT software. There are the minor things that changed that didn't need to (swipe up instead of down to unlock, and the floating "ring" that doesn't appear to do anything); changed the icons in the mail widget; removed the picture link in the message section; randomly reloads after returning from a function (haven't been able to document when it does this - but returning to the home screen it flashes HTC and the reloads. BUT the worst thing is that it appears to have disabled access to the internet! Firefox, internet, google, it gets stuck in a loop - the screen will briefly pop up, and then it returns to refreshing javascript function. An example is following up on a story on cnn.news feed.
Sorry for the long note - but all these items came up after the software update, that didn't appear to make anything better, and in fact after a year of using this phone just fine removed some critical applications of the phone. Looking at the other posts and resetting the phone to factory default (and wiping data out) seems like a bad response to me.

Factory resetting will restore the firmware to its factory state instead of just updating right over the current one, which could cause problems, and why i think problems happen after these updates without factory resetting. Its good to backup all your stuff as well before you factory reset
Also as for SMS, internet browsers, etc, there are WAY BETTER ones in the store than stock...I HATE the stock SMS app and I have a Galaxy S3...I switched to GoSMS and it works flawlessly....try getting replacements from the store and see if it solves any problems anyone is having
